A Department of Homeland Security review found that FEMA workers improperly collected political information and sometimes avoided helping homes displaying pro-Trump or other political signs during disaster relief efforts. Although former FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell initially called the 2024 incident an “isolated” case, investigators later discovered similar behavior dating back to 2021. The report warns that vague FEMA field guidelines allowed staff to skip aid based on subjective feelings of “hostility,” creating risks of politically biased disaster relief distribution.
